Since the middle of last century, most custom auto graphics have been images printed on some kind of vinyl. Vinyl's durability, brightness, and decent resistance to fading have kept it popular over the years. New developments in vinyl technology have also contributed to its longevity.
Recently, a few new successful vinyl technologies have made the installation and removal of custom auto graphics much easier than it once was. With older kinds of vinyl, installation usually consisted of applying potentially hazardous chemical adhesives that would bond either with the addition of another chemical, or with the addition of high heat levels. This, in turn, would necessitate complex equipment such as torches, heat guns, or chemical safety equipment.
New kinds of vinyl eliminate much of the troublesome installation process. Some vinyl is more like a sticker now: simply peel it off of the backing and apply carefully (many professionals recommend the basic tools, including a squeegee or applicator and some kind of air release tool). Other kinds of vinyl adhesives are pressure-sensitive, and will adhere only when firm pressure is applied.
Professional Custom Auto Graphics Installation
For large scale, complex, or professional custom auto graphics, professional installation may still be the best choice. In a professional setting, using the high-tech, easy-to-handle vinyl simply means quicker installation and less manpower, which often translates to less installation costs. Many professional installations can be accomplished within one or two days, even for large jobs such as truck or cargo van wrapping.
The technology used in graphic installations has dramatically improved over the last 15 years. Many improvements in materials, printing technology, and inks have come very recently, leading to a boom in novel graphic installation techniques. Among these are the popular techniques of vehicle wrapping and window installations.
Simplifying Graphic Installations with Technology
Vinyl and adhesives have grown drastically easier to use in the last few years. Self-adhesive vinyl and pressure sensitive adhesives have made graphic installations much easier to handle, whether it be indoor, outdoors, or on a vehicle. By using these new kinds of vinyl, graphic installers can adjust graphics before final placement without marring the graphic or the surface.
Many large graphic installations on cars or other vehicles are vehicle wraps. Wraps are images that are printed on thin sheets of vinyl and affixed to the surface of a vehicle to create a seamless graphic image. The vinyl is extremely durable: despite its thickness, it can last as long as three years without leaving residue on the vehicle, and protect the vehicle's surface from scratches and other marks.
Some vehicle wraps also use technology common in window graphic installations. For many window graphics, custom graphics shops print onto a perforated vinyl that allows those inside of the vehicle to see out without allowing those outside to see in. Instead, those on the outside are presented with a colorful graphic or photo-realistic image.
