Acura RSX Accessories Parts Accessory for RSX
At one time, the Segment of the Moment syndrome favored compact sports coupes. Young drivers thrived on them, brand images were built, and magazines ran performance shootouts every year to help the world decide which set of wheels would emerge atop the mile-high pile of Prelude, Celica, MR2, Integra, 240SX, Eclipse, Talon, MX-6, Probe, Cougar, and Corrado.
Here in 2005, however, asking "Integra or Celica?" ranks right up there with "Nintendo or Sega?" and "VHS or Beta?" on the list of Obsolete Questions Bearing No Contemporary Relevance. Scroll through those 11 revered nameplates and you may notice that only two exist today. After the Celica's imminent death, that drops to one, and you can round off to zero considering the Mitsubishi Eclipse lives on in name only.
But there's one in that crowd who went the other way: changed its name, kept the spirit. It's the one credited for raising the technological bar and practically inventing the aftermarket tuner industry, and the one that remains faithful to its roots. That would be the Acura RSX, formerly known as Integra, which got a full redesign for 2002 consisting of clean-sheet engines, transmissions, suspensions, and sheetmetal. These changes could have sustained it for years, but Acura performed its annual checkup and decided the RSX wouldn't mind further sharpening in all of those areas. Nor should we.
The Integra always got first dibs for Honda's latest technological tricks. In 1990 it was the first Honda "B-series" engine; 1992 marked the first commercial release of VTEC in a car normal people can afford; and both 1994 and 1997 saw new worldwide records being set for specific horsepower output. The RSX extends the legacy with new technology called VTC, which isn't a typo but stands for variable timing control. By adjusting camshaft timing continuously throughout a 50-degree range, it complements VTEC (the now-famous device that opens the valves longer and/or higher for optimal airflow) by adding flexibility and more torque at the low end. Hence why Acura went from saying "VTEC" to saying "iVTEC": VTC adds "intelligence."
With 210 horsepower and a Ferrari-esque 8,100 RPM redline, it ain't dumb. And even those numbers might not describe the excitement in exploiting the RSX's abilities. In the time some cars take to rev their tachometers to "3", the needle on the RSX is already pointing at "6", which marks the point where VTEC unleashes its fist of fury, switches over to the bad-ass camshaft and has you breaking every speed limit in the Western world. Its high-rev nature (or dependency) contrasts pretty sharply with the modest muscle available in low-speed driving, but taken by itself, 143 pounds-feet of twist is a reasonable enough number.
And did I mention that despite all the abuse thrown at it (including plenty of dipping in the VTEC well and a few extended visits to 120 MPH), the RSX still returned 29 miles per gallon? Talk about getting something for nothing.
Intake and exhaust revisions are responsible for 2005's improvements, which aren't easy to find in an engine that was already capable of squeezing 200 horsepower (now 210) from 2 liters. It's hard to think of any improvement being applied to the rest of the powertrain, as you work that engine through an easy, satisfying six-speed lever and a forgiving clutch that has natural and non-abrupt engagement. SuperBowls have been won with less teamwork than this.
But powertrains have always been the RSX's forte, so this year extra effort was expended on upping its track skills. Acura attacked from all angles: widening the track, reducing steering ratio to 14.9:1, dropping ride height by 0.7 inches, and on the RSX Type S, bulking up the wheels to 17x7 inches and beefing up the stabilizer bars at each end. It's safe to say we've heard the last complaint of RSX being "under-tired." Two fat pairs of P215/45R17-sized rubber mean that you may now confuse RSX with NSX in outright grip. Understeer, while it happens, has been postponed to the point that it's hardly an issue anymore; the RSX simply bites and hangs on. Cornering is flat and oversteer can be induced with a brush of the brakes. Despite decent road feel, though, the steering could stand to be more excited as it goes about its business (2002's front suspension downgrade from double wishbones to struts might deserve partial blame), though at least the wheel gets the message right away.
